another data point, from firefox's javascript console, SM 1.4.9a
generates this error when I see the behavior:

Error: window.parent.frames.left has no properties
Source File:
https://webmail.linuxpowered.net/sm149a/src/right_main.php?PG_SHOWALL=0&sort=0&startMessage=1&mailbox=user.hostmaster
Line: 62

But SM 1.4.1 does not .. whats even stranger as I mentioned
earlier if I log out of SM 1.4.9a(or SM 1.4.6 or SM 1.4.5 I got
em all installed at the same time), and log in to SM 1.4.1 I
get the same behavior.

*shrugs*
