This was not a s390 patch but an omission in the spec file of your source rpm
as far as I recall.

Ah, I was using the 2.4.9-17 kernel sources after all, from rsync://ftp.redhat.de/s390
Will have a look at the 2.4.9-17.4 version.

That's one of the drawbacks of the same platform on small and large boxes... ;-)
