Florian, thanks for your reply. Maybe I forgot some details, this is a custom 
distribution which was based on RH 6.2 back in 1998. The only ancient thing 
still left in there is glibc 2.1.3 and rpm 3.0.6.

I've managed to upgrade to glibc 2.9 + rpm 3.0.6 (don't ask :-)).

The trick is to provide/find a contigous upgrade path
without user interaction. Reinstallation is not possible
as this distribution is currently installed on 2.000 production boxes.

My main question is how to upgrade the rpm3 package database?
