installing ppc and ppc64 packages together

I'm running into a problem on my RHEL 4 system where up2date is failing on it and I am unable to get ppc and ppc64 packages to install correctly using rpm. For example, if I try to install glibc-2-3-4.2.19.ppc.rpm and glibc-2.3.4-2.19.ppc64.rpm it tells me this:

# rpm -ivh glibc-2.3.4-2.19.ppc.rpm glibc-2.3.4-2.19.ppc64.rpm
warning: package glibc = 2.3.4-2.19 was already added, replacing with glibc <= 2.3.4-2.19

When the system was first installed I know it had both ppc and ppc64 versions of the package installed because glibc was listed twice in the rpm query. However, now I am unable to get the latest version of glibc to install for both ppc and ppc64. If I use --force on the command line with one package or the other, it will get installed, but the other version of the package will no longer appear in the rpm database. This causes problems when trying to upgrade/install other packages that have both ppc and ppc64 versions.

Hopefully, this is something many people have seen before. I search through the archives for this mailing list, but did not find a solution to the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
