In response to Bill question : (about /dev/dsp) I checked it and here is a detailed answer:
cat /usr/share/sndconfig/sample.au > /dev/dsp plays sound cat /usr/share/sndconfig/sample.au > /dev/dsp1 plays sound
configuring XMMS with /dev/dsp and /dev/dsp1 (by configuring I mean as described in my former posting in this group) *does not* play sound
