ok well i can get an internet connection going with wvdial.
do you suggest doing a fresh red hat install, getting onto
the net and using uptodate?
if so.  can you tell me how to register with RHN?
also to let you know... i have a very slow internet connection.

i already downloaded a lot of rpms from the i386 dir of the updates site.
do you suggest that i install all the nonkernal packages from there first
so that uptodate does not have to go downloading lots?
i did download pretty much everything from the updates site....

i386/	seemed to contain all packages and kernel stuff
i686/	seemed to only contain kernal packages optimised for i686 
which is what i have
srpms/	seemed to contain sources, but not for everything in i386, 
and seeminly nothing for i686

Can you tell me how to go about installing everything from here and in what order?

1. install all packages from i386 that are not called kernel*
2.  install the kernal update that i want from i686
3.  install the kernal source from i386  maybe the kernel doc as well?  
but not the kernel boot etc. stuff right??

so is it correct that i should not install any kernel stuff from i386, or should i do this before going to the i686 kernel stuff.

thus, is there any point installing any sources from SRPMS?  what are they for.  in particular, what is the src rpms for the kernal in SRPMS?

If i do all this, what is the need for RHN uptodate?  if i want to use uptodate,  which things should i let it handle...?  can i download stuff beforehand and still use uptodate to install them from local dirs?

Than your kernel source prabably didnt install correct.
I would do a fresh install if you can. And install the new
kernel and sources over. Also, I would update the kernel
through the RedHat Network.

You will need to use the kernel source for the kernel you
wish to run. Which should be the new one.
