Alan, thanks for your answer

Let's start over,

Description of the problem:

No sound on a Dell Inspiron 8000 running RedHat 8.0 when upgrading to
kernel-2.4.18-17.8.0. The only custom drivers are the NVIDIA graphics,
necessary to run X on this system.

Performed tests and results:

Issued "play soundfile.wav": some chirping coming out of the speakers,
the command does not come to an end within reasonable time.

Rolled back system to kernel-2.4.18-14: Sound works perfectly well.

Installed ALSA drivers on kernel-2.4.18-17.8.0: No sound at all when
playing file.

New tests: rmmod maestro3
           insmod maestro3 gpio_pin=1
result: on kernel-2.4.18-17.8.0 no sound at all, no chirping noise.
on kernel-2.4.18-14 receive the following message:
              Using /lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/sound/maestro3.o
Warning: ignoring gpio_pin=1, no such parameter in this module
              Module maestro3 loaded, with warnings
        sound is OK in 18-14

When I run "play somefile.wav" kernel-2.4.18-17.8.0, some noise comes
out of the headphones (or speaker). The play command does not end

result of lsmod (on 2.4.18-14)
