I have already installed X. Can I switch to text only when it boots?

Good, Thanks for being here to help.
Extreme Linux Newbie here!
I purchased Red Hat 9 for Dummies on ebay.
Just installed it on an old E-Machine 533.
It runs slow. Could this be because it only has 64mb ram?
I know 9 is no longer supported but I have only played with Linux and
this seemed to be the cheapest route without going to school.
I have also tried Linspire and Freespire but they would not work on this
machine.
I hope to learn to install a web, e-mail, ftp, file, server (etc).
Any tips and help would be greatly appreciated.
64Mb is too little if you're planning on running X. If you want to run
only console apps, then 64M should be fine.
