(partial) solution of: File /dev/sda1 disappeared!

I was told that it is enough to issue as root the commands:

cd /dev
mknod sda1 b 8 1

Now everything works.
This part of the problem remains though:

> 1) what could have happened? Kudzu messing around? I don't remember
> doing anything myself that could have canceled device files
