No... I downloaded the kernel source from kernel.org.

Err... what new hotplug scripts?  That might be the problem right there!

I'll try it tonight from home, where my home box has 2.4.  At work I'm
still using 2.6.

I don't have a /etc/hotplug.d directory, and "locate default.hotplug"
doesn't find that either.  Presumably these are part of the new hotplug
scripts which you mention, but which I've never heard of.
