I've said this a LOT of times before, I'll summarize it this time:
hdparm is not a benchmark
hdparm is a really unreliable crappy way to measure disk throughput

tiobench (http://tiobench.sf.net) is a much more reliable way to do
this, or basically every single other benchmark out there.
