indeed, ... and it works just great ... here is the story, trimmed a little bit : first thing : unless specified otherwise, KDE installs itself under $HOME/kde3.2 which is great for early testings 1. downloaded 'konstruct' as suggested 2. put it in my very personal $HOME/down/kde/konstruct-stable.tar.bz2 and uncompressed it in ( $KON= ) $HOME/down/kde/konstruct 3. read the README file 3. went to $KON/kde/kdebase and i executed 'make install' 4. it failed because i am behind a firewall, i re-read the README file and i configured wget with the firewall settings created a .wgetrc file with this content : ftp_proxy=http://<machine-name>:<port-no> 5. reran 'make install' and noticed konstruct already started to download the source files 6. got an error saying some Perl prce libraries were not found; the error was also giving the URL for the libraries; went there, got them and installed them 7. again i restarted konstruct which continue from the the point it left 8. few hours later, all the stuff from 'kdebase' was downloaded, built and installed in my $HOME/kde3.2 9. few twicks i have changed my .cshrc ( 'cause i use csh ) by adding these vars as suggested by README ## KDE 3.2 settings setenv QTDIR "~/kde3.2" setenv KDEDIRS "~/kde3.2" setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH "~/kde3.2/lib:${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}" setenv PATH "~/kde3.2/bin:${PATH}" setenv KDETEST "~/.kdetest" 10. before going further, here is what i have noticed after issuing 'startkde' command ( $HOME/kde3.2/bin ) - my older preferences ( prev. KDE was installed as root, packaged etc. ) were mostly lost - the lock screen needs killed from outside ( the README suggests what needs be changed for this to work but i did not have time do do it, yet ) 11. issued 'startkde' and waited the new desktop to take over the older one ( which it did ... ) 12. started to tweak the desktop, konsole etc. while issuing 'make install' inside other directories located in my $KON/kde directory. **** overall i am very very impressed by this new version, and, indeed, it is way way faster and more polished than the other one **** 13. i plan to do the same thing with my notebook at home ( IBM R31 ) this week-end and later next weeks move the installation as root hope this helps, -ionut- m.fioretti@inwind .it To: shrike-list@xxxxxxxxxx Sent by: cc: shrike-list-admin Subject: KDE 3.2 and KOffice 1.3, anyone? @redhat.com 02/06/2004 12:26 AM Please respond to shrike-list Greetings, has anybody already packaged/tried to package KDE 3.2 and/or KOffice 1.3 for shrike? Are there RPMs already available? To build them, are there any particular gotchas?
