artsd probably has it open. Try killing artsd, or run xmms under artsdsp, that is "artsdsp xmms". I'm pretty sure that there's an aRts output plugin for xmms as well (I don't have one, but that's because I would've chosen not to install it, but you don't want to do what I do :-))
