Inaccurate, not really wrong. KDE's multimedia packages are built without
mp3 support either, e.g. noatun. Or rhythmbox for GNOME.  

Doesn't the kde-redhat project at sf.net provide alternative packages
for KDE?

Concerning some multimedia add-ons, consult http://rpm.livna.org
