the instructions in the documentation:
/opt/IBMJava2-141/jre/bin

how can i be sure it's working?

echo $PATH
which java

$PATH should show one of the last sections is "/opt/IBMJava2-141/jre/bin" and java should show up in that dir as well. Can you ls that dir and see if there is a "java" within?

thank you again. now we are getting somewhere.
there is a 'java' there. i think i see the mistake now.

you suggested:

JAVA_HOME=/path/to/java
PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin
export JAVA_HOME PATH

which i followed to the letter. however, when i inserted /opt/IBMJava2-141/jre/bin for
JAVA_HOME= this caused 'bin' to be added twice. the system thinks the
path is /opt/IBMJava2-141/jre/bin/bin

i corrected that issue, logged out and back in, and i have now have one java applet running which failed before, so i think it is safe to assume it works.

can anyone offer any assistance on getting the plugin to work for firebird? i followed the directions and made a symlink from libjavaplugin_oji.so to the /path/to/browers/plugins dir, restarted the browers, but about:plugins does not report the java plugin as working.
