Ahh, gotcha. Yes, that would turn off all syntax highlighting, and
that's what I thought you were looking for.

You may have hit '#' while the cursor was on a '#' (# searches backwards
for the 'word' under the cursor), or searched for a '#' character.

Search for something else (ie /aslkalsjd), or turn search highlighting
off with:

:set nohlsearch
