Whose IMAP are you using?  Courier IMAP (at least the version I'm running)
is in init.d (not xinetd.d) and is setup to use chkconfig by level.  I
should have clarified that.

Someone put a binary "imap" file in /etc/init.d.

Assuming you installed the imap that came on the CDs, you shouldn't have 
an "imap" file in /etc/init.d, anyhow.  There should be one in 
/etc/xinetd.d.
