Auto detecting removal/insertion PCMCIA cards

Somehow, while playing with the 2.6 series of kernels, I managed to munge my
RH 9 laptop such that it no longer autodetects the removal or insertion of
PCMCIA cards.

Prior to this mishap I could insert my wireless card and have the associated
net interface brought up automatically. A removal of the card would
gracefully take down the interface. To accomplish this now I have to ifdown
eth1 to take it down and service pcmcia restart to get the card recognized.

What service(s) accomplish this task on a stock RH9 system? I've already
tried:

[klinebl@laptop2 klinebl]$ sudo /sbin/service pcmcia status
cardmgr (pid 8178) is running...
[klinebl@laptop2 klinebl]$

TIA,

Barry
