Oh ok understood :-).

How about the permissions on your /dev/tty[0-9] ? before and after you
login.

Also the permissions on your /etc/passwd although if this one is screwed
up the prompt will be different not a blank screen. If I am not mistaken.

Can you log into the command prompt through GUI(konsole or
gnome-terminal) ? If yes then try and see ps aux | grep mingetty
(mingetty is default on RH if you have changed it to agetty or something
else grep the appropriate *getty). See after logging in if the owner of
the *getty process undergoes a change to reflect the ownership of the
user you tried to log in as.

Try changing the the getty in inittab if you have not already done that
to other options like agetty or mgetty. For these you will need the
appropriate rpms installed.

1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty1

Change the above line to something like and then try logging into the
first tty if you change the tty1 line. Note you will need to reboot for
this to take effect or you have to use something like telinit with the
"q" option and then kill the already running *getty process for the
appropriate tty.

1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mgetty tty1

Above are all just ideas I dont know what your problem is sorry. :-(
