THe default shell is set in the /etc/passwd entry for the user. The
prompt you get is set by the PROMPT command. Do a man bash and search
for PROMPT.


Umm you still have not come out and said what do you mean by no bash
prompt. How about typing up for the list what you actually see after you
log in on a tty. That may be helpful.

No Bash prompt = Terminal opens to a 100% blank screen that is unresponsive.
