severn-95 fail to see pcmcia cards

I'm installing severn 95 on a Gateway Solo 5100 portable. It has both a socket (nat semi ) and xircom pcmcia card ( eth0 and eth1). Both were found during the install. Both were configured - eth0 for the lan eth1 for the internet.

On the first reboot, kudzu can't find either one. When it tires to start eth0, I get

interface 'eth0' not found
pcnet_cs device eth0 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization

And then the machine freezes when pcmcia come up. Hard freezes.

What I get is:

Starting pcmcia: Yenta IRQ list 0c98, PCI IRQ 9
Socket status: 30000010
[ one repeat ]
freeeeeeeze

any help appreciated
sean
