Thanks for the long and longer answers :)If you installed RH9 on an i686 then you will have already installed the i686 glibc. You can check with
so even if I download the i686 kernel glibc rpms it won't change much ?
rpm -qa --qf '%{name}-%{version}-%{release}.%{arch}\n' | grep i686
which will show you all three i686 RPMs (kernel, openssl and glibc) -- unless you've installed some others. If you're applying updates "by hand" rather than using up2date be very careful to install the right versions of these. I believe there's an FAQ of some sort on the Red Hat web site that goes into how to recover when you've installed the wrong one.
