Telnetting to any of the /dev/ttyS* didn't work.

Anyone have any other ideas?

What is the uucp package?

Telnet won't work through a serial port. If you do a man telnet , the port it refers to is a TCP/IP port. cu will connect through the serial port, and it will be like you are in a console window without X running.

The uucp package is on the RedHat disk #3 and does not get installed by default. To see if it's installed on your machine, try:

rpm -qa |grep uucp

If it does not show up, install it from the 3rd shrike disk, and you will have cu loaded.

Are you trying to connect to the linux box from another linux machine, or from a Windows box? You mentioned a phone system. Can you give us more details on exactly what you are trying to do? Do you have to use telnet?
