It seems that the rawhide package of spamassassin really wants perl
5.8.1 even though the rpm doesn't state that that is a dependency.
Rather than fiddling around with my perl environment and potentially
breaking God knows what, I just uninstalled the rawhide spamassassin and
downloaded and installed the rpms available from www.spamassassin.org's
download page which work fine.
Hopefully that may help someone else.
