I'm running most of my systems on 3c905s...they maybe a few years old, but 
they're wonderfully stable and reliable.  Personally, I swear by 3Com, and 
these NICs.

He could try the mii-tool application.  If the settings that mii-tool set 
up don't stick, then he could always put the mii-tool command into his 
/etc/rc.d/rc.local file.
