I haven't really followed this thread, but this doesn't look right.
Shouldn't it be

LABEL=/		/	ext3	defaults	1 1

As written in your fstab, root would be mounted at hdb instead of at /.

This shows that something was mounted at hdb... probably your partion
named /.

If I'm off base for not following the thread, I'm sorry for the wasted
bandwidth.
