You just need to make sure your SATA controller is supported.  I've got
a Silicon Image 3112.

SiI3112 Serial ATA: IDE controller at PCI slot 05:04.0
SiI3112 Serial ATA: chipset revision 2
SiI3112 Serial ATA: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later

Standard tools work just fine.
