Every once in a while, network traffic for eth0 stalls on my Linux machine. I've seen it happen on other Linux installations as well. They are all running a recent errata kernel (2.4.20-19.9 and 2.4.20-19.7), and a variety of network adapters/drivers. For no reason at all, nothing would go out. Sometimes some fiddling would work, sometimes it just rights itself, sometimes I end up rebooting. In the most recent instance, ifconfig output (IP address edited out) shows: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:C0:F0:4A:72:32 inet addr:x.x.x.x Bcast:207.180.74.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:425249 errors:295 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:346 TX packets:530213 errors:115 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:115 collisions:2631 txqueuelen:100 RX bytes:130197745 (124.1 Mb) TX bytes:56032843 (53.4 Mb) Interrupt:11 Base address:0xd000 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:113777 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:113777 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:27322169 (26.0 Mb) TX bytes:27322169 (26.0 Mb) When eth0 stalls, the TX error and carrier counts increase steadily. Anyone know what this means? Any suggestions on how to investigate this problem? It's no use Googling for ifconfig output: EVERYBODY posts ifconfig output for any network-related issue. Thanks.
