Not necessarily.  Uname -a will tell you the architecture for which the 
kernel was compiled.  In my case, it says "i686 athlon i386".  

I know, since I built the box from parts, that I have an Athlon in my 
system, but I wouldn't be able to tell from the uname -a output.
