smp kernel question

Hi,
I have a processor that supports hyperthreading so I use the smp kernel.
I am confused by what the top program shows me. I can have one process
using 99% of the cpu and another using 20%, or two processes using 99%.
What is happening here? Despite the smp kernel and hyperthreading, there
is only one cpu involved. Does only half the cpu get used by any one
process? Any information would be appreciated.
  Richard
