Probably operator malfunction on the swap setup. I unplugged the drive cables and removed /dev/hda from the BIOS. The system then booted fine from its boot floppy.
cat /proc/mdstat says that it will take another 51 minutes to complete the recovery.
I do wish that boot with a "broken" mirror put out some bigger error messages though.
