Probably coz your 1394 modules are really old from RedHat :-)

Seriously, though, I have had severe problems with a dv cam and
the 1394 modules so I built a 2.4.21 kernel with the latest 1394
from http://www.linux1394.org/ and that solved it

Maybe if you can build yourself a 2.4.20 using that it may help
