I thought I would ask this question regarding support in Shrike or Severn,

With having found the 1710 on sale for $99 after rebate over the weekend,
I went ahead and purchased one (but have yet to open it). Anyone with
experience on this particular printer in either Shrike or Severn?

Samsung provides a linux driver for all their laser printers that will work with CUPS and other Linux printing systems.

Go to

http://www.samsung.com/Products/Printer/support/Download/driver/driver_SamsungLinuxDriver_0000004418_3.htm

and click on the file name lpp-1.0.6.i386.tar.gz.

There is a readme file in the extracted tarball describing how to use it. I am currently looking at Samsung laser printers but don't have one yet, so I can't offer confirmation that all works. However, anothe list member sent me a positive response about the ML-1430 printer working well with this driver.
