strange problem installing RH9 on dual-processor

OK, so being ambitious and even more foolish, I went ahead and wiped out the
factory-installed RH9 and put on my own reinstall on my gigantic Dell Dimension
650 dual processor. Two things have happened:

The graphical GRUB loader seems to have become history. I have no clue but the
message says that it is off to GRUB and becomes Mr. Grump. In other words, out
pops up a prompt which accepts nothing but "reboot" to come to the same spot.
The boot disk (stored in a floppy) however is what brought me to this screen
(from where I sit and type. Does anyone know what happened? How do I resolve
it?

Point number 2: my graphics card and Dell 2000 FP Digital monitor would love to
provide a 1600x1400 resolution, but Mr. Grump will give me no more. Why?

 SZ: Pixels Physical Refresh
*0 1280 x 1024 ( 412mm x 313mm ) *75
 1 1280 x 960 ( 412mm x 313mm ) 75
 2 1152 x 864 ( 412mm x 313mm ) 75
 3 1024 x 768 ( 412mm x 313mm ) 75
 4 800 x 600 ( 412mm x 313mm ) 75
 5 640 x 480 ( 412mm x 313mm ) 75
Current rotation - normal
Current reflection - none
Rotations possible - normal
Reflections possible - none

I am pretty certain it supports it. But why does it not even show up? Can
someone please enlighten me, as to what I should do. And I do not have gnome or
kde installed (i use fvwm).

Those are enough shocks for a day -- I will be back tomorrow with more:-(

Thanks and best wishes!
