At the risk of sounding stupid (not a stretch), what's a "working console"?
One that works :-D. It's comparatively difficult to get a non-working console in 2.4, but in 2.6 it's dead easy: there's a big thing about 2.6 in here -- http://www.kerneltraffic.org/kernel-traffic/kt20030730_224.html. It mentions the console problem under 2.4 gotchas.
