There _was_ a bug in something, possibly the resolver library, which prevented chained CNAMES from working properly. It seems to work fine for me on RH9, so perhaps you just need to make sure you're glibc is up to date.
Sorry, meant to add that the bug might also be in mozilla -- I'm running 1.4 from rawhide here.
