Sorry, I did not make my meaning clear. I know that Red Hat do not
support upgrading from a prior Red Hat release with Ximian Desktop
installed.

What I meant was that if some packaging issues are not clarified then
exactly the same issue I am seeing with RHL9+XD2 will arise again with
RHL10+XD2 when RHL10 becomes a XD2 supported distro.

My point is that red-carpet does not support all updates from Red Hat.
In particular it does not support kernel updates - that was confirmed
for me on the Ximian Users List by Mark Gordon of Ximian. Therefore XD2
users need to use both red-carpet for Ximian and standard Red Hat
updates, *and* up2date for kernel updates. A novice user in this
situation might be thrown by up2date also telling them that updates are
available for control-centre, nautilus, and xscreensaver, among others.
*I'm* not thrown by them - but others will be.

Are you suggesting there is no oddity (be it Ximian's or Red Hat's
responsibility) in this case:

$ rpm -q control-center nautilus xscreensaver
control-center-2.2.1-0.ximian.6.8
nautilus-2.2.4-0.ximian.6.5
xscreensaver-4.09-0.ximian.6.6

But up2date thinks that

control-center-2.2.0.1-9
nautilus-2.2.1-5
xscreensaver-4.07-2

should be installed? It can't be that up2date always thinks Red Hat
packages are newer, otherwise it would tell me to replace all the Ximian
packages with the older Red Hat ones.
