Ok thanks, but do you have any tips on how to remove awareness of
the soundcard so that it may get re-discovered?

I don't have alsamixer installed.

If you want xine (without re-compiling it) you'll need alsa. Install alsa-utils from freshrpms and then you'll have it. ALSA is *much* better than the old OSS stuff. Ignore sndconfig.

If you're noy sure what's going on, take a look at /etc/modules.conf. Mine has lines like this for OSS:

# alias sound-slot-0 maestro3
# post-install sound-slot-0 /bin/aumix-minimal -f /etc/.aumixrc -L >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
# pre-remove sound-slot-0 /bin/aumix-minimal -f /etc/.aumixrc -S >/dev/null 2>&1 || :

(They're commented out). For ALSA I have

alias snd-card-0 snd-maestro3
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
