If you installed xine from freshrpms then you got alsa as well. Run "alsamixer" and hit "m" on the channels you want to un-mute (so that the double "M" at the top goes away).

So, what I want to know is how does one go about removing the
soundcard drivers to the point that the system will detect the
soundcard as new hardware and commence to install it?

I've rmmod'd what seemed to be the relevant things (maestro3,
soundcore, etc.), but a reboot brought them back.

Any hints appreciated!
