Interesting...does it allow you to log in, at all, or does it hang at the actual login screen? Can you hit CTRL-ALT-F1 to try to get to a text console? Another option might be to try booting into runlevel 3 (from a lilo boot, just type "linux 3", from Grub, select "a"...I believe...and at the end of the boot parameter line, just type "3" and hit enter), and then running "startx" from a command line.
