I have not experienced any of that....and I update regularly.  Of course
I don't have Audigy soundcards.  Do you expect that Red Hat has all
flavors of soundcards that they can test on prior to releasing an
update?

And who "carefully crafted" all of that?  

I will tell you what I do and maybe it can help you.  Of course, it does
require work and a small cost in SW.

I keep backups of all of my production servers.  I also have VMware. 
What I do is keep several VM's of my production servers as "test beds". 
I run VMware with non-persistent disks.  Then when updates are scheduled
I update my VM's and test to see if anything breaks.  If it does....I
either craft a workaround or bugzilla it and wait for a fix.

Nothing or somethings?

Hard to tell what "functionality" you are referring to....  I've also
never heard xinetd referred to as a "super-server".  How do you mean
that?
