Ok, my grub.conf looks as follows:
serial --unit=0 --speed=115200
terminal --timeout=0 serial
default=0
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
comment out this line. i do not think that a splashimage and serial console mix.
