Start it from the console, and see if there are errors or warnings. 
Perhaps some application has /dev/dsp locked? (such as the sound server.)

Did you check the configure output to make sure that you saw:
checking for Mix_OpenAudio in -lSDL_mixer... yes

If it says "no" you won't have sound.

Also, make sure your volume is turned up. It seems to default to a very 
low level. With my speakers turned up all the way, sound was barely 
audible. After adjusting it via the mixer, it was fine.
