I followed your advice and it seems to be working: I can't understand why we had not to set the visible_hostname in squid.conf in RH8.0 and I can't find instruction on RH manuals.I had the same problem with Squid and Redhat 9. I had to define visible_hostname "yourhostname" in squid.conf since my machine is on my private lan behind a cable modem, It does not like unqualified hostnames. I never had this prob with RH 8. That should fix the start up.
