Two things:

1) Ensure that the audio cable from the CD player to your sound card is in place.
2) If 1) is OK, stick an audio CD in the drive, open a terminal window, type "cdp" [enter], hit the NUMLOCK key, then hit the number 9. Do you hear sound now?
