I'll give the backend proc. a strace during a restart & see what it gets up to.
Hmph. Well, I've seen this on occasion before, but never known the cause nor solution.
I did a strace -f -p on the pid of the CUPS backend/serial process, intending to service restart it, but the strace actually caused the backend to exit (couple of closes & other file accesses, then it exited).
A service restart of cups worked, but did /not/ restart the backend. (I hadn't printed before or after this, BTW).
Any other ideas?
