The kernel that came with RHL9 didn't understand the chipset (i.e., the southbridge), so DMA didn't work on any IDE devices. (The full install took hours... ugh.) The latest errata kernel understands the southbridge (an ICH4), and automatically enables DMA on IDE devices. I'm writing a review of the Dell Latitude D600 laptop for the "Linux on Laptops" web site.
