Ok, I changed the "soft" to "hard" and tried another copy. This time I got "Network is unreachable" errors instead of "I/O Error".

*SIGH*

I have five RH9 machines here and most can't do any significant file transfers over NFS without problems. I usually end up using sftp for big files.
