Booting from Pendrive

Has anyone succeeded preparing a Pendrive USB flash disk to boot linux.

It would be nice to install the installation kernel and initrd on a Pendrive and then boot a system from it in order to install or goto rescue-mode.

I heard that syslinux could make it possible, but my trials didn't succeed.

Regards, Koos.
