We installed j2SDK.1.4.1_03 from www.java.com (Sun's SDK) and it
works fine. It is a little tricky to find. At that site say you want
to download j2re. That will happen. Then look ar the instructions.
At the top you will see a link to J2SDK. Click there and download.
i prefer 1.4.1_03 too see below
Just go here:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/download.html
and click on either column for "Linux RPM in self-extracting file": JRE
if you just want to run Java apps
download, extract, symlink, test, ...
with the rpm i had no luck, after "rpm -ivh ..." it was still 1.3.1
the netscape-way is easyer about:plugins find plugin application/x-java_vm download as unprivileged-user "pi_log.cgi.xpi"
$ su - start your browser and open file:///path/to/pi_log.cgi.xpi install restart your broser, all done ;-)

P.S. I've noticed no problems running the 1.4.2 beta (substitute 1.4.2 in the above URL), and it seems a bit faster than 1.4.1 (which is faster than 1.3.1, which was faster than...).
with 1.3.1 i had problems with internet-banking
eg.
www.sparkasse.de/
sometimes you come further with the mouse, an other time only with the keyboard
with 1.4.2beta the browser crashes while login
with 1.4.1_03 null problems ;-)
